CMH Lego Expo
Lego Expo 2023, hosted 24 young Lego enthusiasts. The builds included scenes, buildings, things that move, and a robot.
EVENT DETAILS
WHEN: April 4th, 2023 at 1:15pm
WHERE: Country Hills Library Program Room
The goal of the Calgary Muslim Homeschoolers Lego Expo is for participants to have fun building with LEGO and use their LEGO builds to showcase their knowledge, artistry, and/or writing skills. We also want each participant to gain experience in presenting their project to an audience.
At this event, children are welcome to bring LEGO builds based on a non-fiction or fiction topic. Add a poster, short story, or comic strip if desired to add more information. For example, can you research a science topic and use LEGO to build a model? Or a LEGO version of a working invention or a simple machine? Are you interested in a particular time or event in history, and can you build a LEGO model of this historical event? Are you exploring geography and want to replicate a famous landmark? or maybe a LEGO build as a book report for your favorite book.
The first part of the program will require each participant to give a short (1-2 minute max) oral presentation. Think of this as an “elevator pitch” to summarize the critical inspiration and content of the project and spark interest in it. The second part of the program will allow participants to mix and mingle, visiting each others’ projects and engaging with them to view and experience the builds.
At a minimum, we would ask each participant to be able to give their “elevator pitch” and then discuss the inspiration and details of their build with others in the second part of the program. For younger students, parents are welcome to help out and coach during the event. We encourage older students to supplement their LEGO project with additional information/materials to add interest and educational value.
Some ideas for additional material to supplement the build are:
An original comic strip or artwork about a fictional story.
An original short story or poem.
A book report of a favorite book.
A poster to explain their non-fictional topic
The above are only examples, and if you can think of other exciting projects and ideas you want to build your LEGO around, feel free!
